Today, the Urban League of Louisiana announced WAKE UP THE VOTE LOUISIANA, a voter participation initiative designed to promote the importance of voter engagement and mobilization through election day. The initiative will launch on November 3, 2018, at 10 a.m., with a 24 Hour Voter Participation Rally in New Orleans at the Urban League of Louisiana Headquarters, 4640 S. Carrollton Avenue. The 24 Hour Voter Participation Rally will include information on ballot initiatives, what voters need to know before going to the polls, speakers, panel discussions, a film screening, musical performances and a Sleep In.

“The Urban League of Louisiana has a rich history of engaging residents around voter registration and voting on election day,” said Judy Reese Morse, President & CEO of the Urban League of Louisiana.” The 24 Hour Voter Participation Rally will focus on the very serious obligation and privilege that the founding fathers and mothers of the Urban League movement fought so hard for,” she said. “WAKE UP THE VOTE LOUISIANA is a new effort that reinforces the Urban League of Louisiana’s core value of voting.”
The event will be supported by partner organizations, which will bring members and stakeholders throughout the 24 hour period to encourage and engage voters to turn out and vote.

“Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has a strong legacy of advocacy and action,”said Jonathan Stewart, President of Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. “Our Brothers in New Orleans are proud to stand with our region and state as we mobilize voters by engaging them on the issues that impact our communities like ending mass incarceration. We are proud to join forces with the Urban League of Louisiana and others to increase our collective impact.”

In addition to the 24 Hour Voter Participation Rally, the Urban League of Louisiana is engaging high school students and co-sponsoring a candidate seminar through its auxiliary organizations, the Urban League Young Professionals and the Urban League Guild.
