Urban League of Louisiana President and CEO Releases Statement on Derek Chauvin Sentencing
Issued: June 25, 2021
The Urban League of Louisiana believes the 22.5 year sentence given to Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd reflects a level of justice rarely seen in cases involving police misconduct. While it is not the 30 year sentence sought by the prosecution, and, we believe, what Chauvin deserved for his actions, the sentence does reflect a response to the cruelty and the impact of what we all saw and felt when watching the video of George Floyd being murdered.
We call for the same level of accountability to be brought in response to the murder of Ronald Greene. We continue to call for true police reform and a transformation of the criminal justice system that respects everyone’s civil and human rights. But today’s sentencing allows for what we hope will bring some peace to the Floyd family and many others across the country and around the world.
