Position Announcement: President and Chief Executive Officer

JOB DESCRIPTION

Celebrating 80 years of service, the Urban League of Louisiana (ULLA) works to enable African-Americans and other communities seeking equity to secure economic self-reliance, parity and civil rights. Headquartered in New Orleans with a satellite office in Baton Rouge, the Urban League’s three Centers of Excellence are focused on the areas of education and youth development, workforce and economic development and public policy and advocacy.

The ULLA President and CEO is the chief administrator and reports to the Board of Directors. The President and CEO provides executive leadership to the organization through planning, directing, administering, monitoring and evaluating the daily operations, programs and services of the affiliate. The President and CEO, in conjunction with the Board Chair, are the principal spokespersons advocating on behalf of and representing the needs and interests of the affiliate, including engaging in dialogue across race, gender, social justice, economic and other differences that affect the people of Louisiana. The ULLA has enjoyed positive working relationships with its board members, local and state government, business, education, community leaders and the National Urban League. The ULLA is seeking an influential and inspirational leader to serve as both President and CEO of the organization who will continue to maintain and enhance existing relationships while creating new partnerships to build bridges and strategically mobilize people and organizations to deliver results.

The President and CEO will assume leadership of the ULLA during a time of profound growth and enormous opportunities within southeast Louisiana. With physical offices located in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, ULLA is uniquely positioned to play a key role and have a major voice in shaping the future of major metropolitan areas in the region.

The ULLA President & CEO will be responsible for ensuring the viability and increasing the vitality of the League in the following areas.

  • Vision and direction-setting – the President and CEO must create a vision that outlines a clear set of organizational, programmatic and policy priorities that are most critical to the people of Louisiana.
  • Ensuring fiscal responsibility and sustainability – the President and CEO as chief development strategist, leader and primary fundraiser will actively cultivate and maintain a diverse donor base; provide leadership, in collaboration with the Board, to successfully develop and execute key initiatives that support and meet fund development targets for operating, capital, programs, and special projects from all sources including government, foundations, corporate, individual donors, and special events.
  • Building external relations and coalitions – the President and CEO must develop and maintain strong relationships with non-profit, community and philanthropic leaders; local, state and federally elected officials; and, senior corporate executives. The President and CEO must be able to work with, gain the support of, and coalesce and mobilize other leaders across ethnic, racial, socio-economic, and local geographical interests to positively impact and change the economic, educational, and social conditions of the people of Louisiana.
  • Guiding program design and deployment; positioning impact and results – the President and CEO will guide program development in a way that creatively builds and enhances existing programs that address economic, education and social disparities specific to New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and beyond, but also encompasses a revenue generating platform. The President and CEO provides quality assurance, monitoring and evaluation of all ULLA programs to ensure alignment with the specific vision, mission, capacity and performance measurements of the League.
  • Organizational management and compliance – the President and CEO leads and directs the daily operations of the statewide affiliate, implementing and administering affiliate plans, policies and procedures. The President and CEO will need to evaluate and develop the organizational and staff reporting and accountability structure to align with the affiliate’s mission, advocacy and programmatic service delivery model.
  • Policy Development and Advocacy – The ULLA is highly regarded as a critical voice of the African-American community, and for setting its advocacy around race and social justice issues and inequities in education and economic/workforce development. The League has a long-standing reputation as an intermediary and convener; a bridge-building voice that speaks out on issues to ensure that the community’s voice and input is taken into account, while communicating in a way that opens dialogue so both sides of an issue can be understood. The President and CEO will need to keep abreast of legislation affecting African-Americans, other communities of color, and low-income populations and participate in policy development discussions, forums and debates that lead to community driven policy outcomes.

The successful candidate will evidence skills and abilities that include:

  • experience as a chief executive or other senior level role, with organizational and operational management experience;
  • understanding of non-profit finance and audit procedures; fiscal stewardship; profit and loss experience;
  • successful fund-raising track record, including innovative and alternative sources of funding;
  • board relations and management experience;
  • strategic planning;
  • strong visionary leader; innovative thinker; fearless, bold, and willing to take responsible risks;
  • track record of effectively engaging, working with and influencing senior corporate executives, foundations, community leaders and elected officials;
  • track record of effective leadership and influence in community advocacy on high-profile issues relative to the ULLA’s core mission and services;
  • track record of strong ethical leadership and having an unimpeachable reputation;
  • ability to connect with, engage, and empower the community;
  • experience and comfort working with a lean staff and limited resources driven by a new economy;
  • political savvy/astute with the ability to navigate politics that will maintain the League’s access to and a strong seat at many tables that addresses key issues in the community;
  • policy development experience; and
  • solid understanding and knowledge of economic/workforce development.

Job requirements: A bachelor’s degree (master’s or doctorate preferred), in business administration, public administration, education, law, social work, human resource administration, finance, or a related discipline. At least five (5) years experience in business management, personnel management, strategic planning, fiscal management, program development and administration, experience working with a volunteer board or other demonstrated community leadership experience. Management and supervisory experience required. Additional skills include excellent organizational and communications skills, grant/proposal writing experience, and government/community relations’ experience. These are minimum requirements for the position of president and CEO.
